Plumbing Problems and Their Symptoms

frozen-pipe-rupturePlumbing issues come in many shapes and sizes. Some require immediate repairs, while some can at least wait for an appointment to be made. None of them should be ignored, though. Many plumbing issues can be difficult to detect outside of professional maintenance and repair appointments, which makes it all the more important that you call for repairs when you notice one. So, let’s take a look at some of the common symptoms that indicate your plumbing is dealing with some sort of issue. The faster you can detect issues with your plumbing, the faster you can have it repaired.

Leaks

Leaks can manifest in a number of different ways, depending on their size and location. Moderate or large leaks can often cause a drop in water pressure, something you should always have checked out as soon as you notice it happening. Smaller leaks, like pinhole leaks, are often too small to cause any immediately noticeable symptoms. They can go unnoticed for months while they damage the area around them. If you notice any obvious water damage in your home, it’s best that you have a plumber check it out in case it’s caused by a leak.

Another really easy way to tell if you have leaks in your home or not is to turn off all your plumbing appliances, and then have a look at your water meter. If the meter isn’t running, then you either don’t have any leaks or they’re too small to register. If the meter continues to run, though, then you definitely should have a plumber check for leaks.

Limescale

Limescale is a very common problem for areas that have hard water issues. As the mineral deposits build up in the pipes, the flow of water is restricted and cuts into the plumbing system’s efficiency. Limescale is also often visible on the faucets in the home, as well as in sinks and showers. If you see limescale, or notice a drop in water pressure, it’s a good idea to call a plumber to examine your system for you as soon as possible. If limescale isn’t cleaned out in time, it will harden and become much more difficult to remove without repiping the entire area.

Drain Clogs

Drain clogs are a less serious issue, but still not one that should be ignored. They can be terribly inconvenient, after all. Drain clogs do not happen all of a sudden, most times. If you notice that one of your drains is draining more slowly than it normally does, it could be that there’s a clog forming in the pipe. You should have a plumber check it out as soon as you can, before the clog has a chance to complete and cause more issues.
